DAYS GONE BYE...BY TOM BOGGS
I know I don't need to
harp on how different
things were back yon-
der...but by gum, they
were, and our priorities
were a bit different. How
excited I was in the late for-
ties to receive a letter from
the RCA mascot dog, Little
Nipper. Enclosed was a
membership pin, and a pic-
ture of that pooch with his
head stuck in a megaphone
attached to a record player.
I'm sure I attached that pin
to my Sunday School shirt
right off,
When's the last time you
saw a bunch of chullun

sticks? (I'm pretty sure I've
written this before...but it's
all new to me.) Shucks, we
could find a stick to be most
anything from a Winchester
rifle to a 50 caliber machine
gun, and to say nothing
about riding the range on a
stick horse or batting a
cloth ball with a substitute
bat in the form Of a stick.
Moose and I used to plan
to get ready to play soldier
after school many times,
but it was not unusual that
by the time we got dressed

together, we'd get outer the
mood to play.
Now, I've told y'all
before how hard Franklin
Aydelott could shoot a mar-
ble, and how or Leo
Daniels had a special
method of shooting his taw
by pinching it between his
fingers. Dangest thing •to
watch. Now, we'd have us a
bunch of marbles in the
ring, and everybody would
be concentrating on prepar-
ing his next shot when all of
a sudden Leo or somebody,
without warning, would
holler out "GRABBERS!"
That was perfectly legal as
far as I knew, so you better
scramble to pick up as
many marbles as you could,
including your favorite
shooting taw,. or you'd be
out some glass eyes.
I've probably written to
you more than once about a
game I'd slip and play with

Thanksgiving marks the
beginning of what I often call
"Poinsettia season."
Everywhere you look there are
pots of poinsettias. They come
in several colors and many
sizes. The pnce range is large.
How can you choose one that
will last for the entire season?
Once you buy one. how do you
care for it? Here are some tips
about both.
Make sure you are buying a
high quality plant before you
leave the store. This will help
you have a beautiful plant
when the soil appears wet. This
is a condition called epinasty
from which the plant will not
recover,
how cool it was. Today,
looks like everybody harps
on fancy walking shoes,
.walking pants, walking
paths and walking
machines. Makes you just
want to walk up there and
holler out 'GRABBERS !"
After bringing your poinset-
tia home, you need to take sev-

should have flowers that are
just beginning to open, or better
still, the plant should have
brightly colored bracts with
flower buds still very tightly
closed. (The flower is small
and yellow. The brightly col-
ored leaves that surround it are
the red or white or coral that
attracts us.) The plant should
appear full with uniformly dark
green leaves from under the
colored bracts to almost the
base of the plant, and the plant
should be strong enough to
stand on its own. No ties or
stakes should be needed. Don't
