How excited I was in the late for- ties to receive a letter from the RCA mascot dog, Little Nipper. Enclosed was a membership pin, and a pic- ture of that pooch with his head stuck in a megaphone attached to a record player. I'm sure I attached that pin to my Sunday School shirt right off, When's the last time you saw a bunch of chullun have a great o1' time with sticks? (I'm pretty sure I've written this before...but it's all new to me.) Shucks, we could find a stick to be most anything from a Winchester rifle to a 50 caliber machine gun, and to say nothing about riding the range on a stick horse or batting a cloth ball with a substitute bat in the form Of a stick. Moose and I used to plan to get ready to play soldier after school many times, but it was not unusual that by the time we got dressed Watch Out For 'Grabbers' up and had all our stuff together, we'd get outer the mood to play. Now, I've told y'all before how hard Franklin Aydelott could shoot a mar- ble, and how or Leo Daniels had a special method of shooting his taw by pinching it between his fingers. Dangest thing •to watch. Now, we'd have us a bunch of marbles in the ring, and everybody would be concentrating on prepar- ing his next shot when all of a sudden Leo or somebody, without warning, would holler out "GRABBERS!" That was perfectly legal as far as I knew, so you better scramble to pick up as many marbles as you could, including your favorite shooting taw,. or you'd be out some glass eyes. I've probably written to you more than once about a game I'd slip and play with my 'cross the street neigh- bor and cousin, Baby Fab Little. When I was sure Brooks Barkley from up the street, Tommy Mack Jones from down the street or some other o1' boy was not around to see...well, yep, I'd play hopscotch. The plant should appear full with uniformly dark green leaves from under the colored bracts to almost the base of the plant, and the plant should be strong enough to stand on its own.
