Simmons, MD, FACS It is the time of year that. many college students or soon- to-be college students search for scholarships to alleviate the financial burden of higher edu- cation. The Alabama National Guard is offering several Minuteman scholarships for the coming academic year. This scholarship is a full tuition or room and board scholarship to the accredited university of your choice. The Minuteman scholarship is for men and women eligible to serve in the Alabama National Guard and comes with a commitment to join the Reserve Officer Training Corps and serve as a commis- sioned officer in the Alabama Army National Guard, The scholarship also comes with an increasing monthly living stipend ($300 for freshmen, $350 for sophomores, $450 for juniors, and $500 for seniors), a $600 per semester book stipend, and sergeant's pay for Ticks are blood-feeding external parasites of mammals, birds and reptiles. They are also important vectors of dis- ease-causing agents. According to Dr. Xing Ping Hu, an Alabama Extension specialist and Auburn University professor of Entomology, there are two groups of ticks: hard-body and soft-body. The most common species in Alabama are hard- body ticks. These ticks have a shield on their backs and are removal. iT)o not use a hot match or cigarette to remove the tick as this may cause the tick to burst. Spotted fever may be acquired from infected pest body fluids that come in con- tact with broken skin, mouth or eyes. ~iii~!iii!i i ~ i~iiii!! i !i tapered at the head end, which ............................................. makesthemeasilyrecogniza- ble by humans. ......... .... +o+r+suc , insects, such as bedbugs, fleas and mosquitoes, ticks attach fLrmly tO their host, feed slow- ...................................................... ly and may go unnoticed for several days while feeding. When they feed, ticks grab onto a host, secrete an anes- thetic and painlessly burrow into the skin with their mouth patts Bites can cause skin irri- tations or even allergic f ac- tions in sensitive people and pets. iAs a result, ticks transmit the widest variety of pathogens of any blood-suck- ing arthropod,/ said Dr. Hu. Some human diseases from ticks include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia and tick-borne relapsing fever./ If a tick attaches to you or your pet, remove it as soon as possible. Prompt removal reduces the chance of infection by Rocky Mountain spotted fever or Lyme disease. Dr. Hu offers the following advice when removing ticks from a host i'Shield your fingers with a paper towel, use tweezers or wear rubber gloves. Grasp the tick close to the skin, and with steady pressure, pull stlaight out. il)0 not twist or jerk, as mouthparts may be left in the skin. Take care not to crush or puncture the tick during monthly and annual training periods. To get started, you must have a minimum ACT of 19 or SAT of 920 and must graduate from college and must com- mission as a second lieutenant before your 32nd birthday. You must also be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If you are interested in a comprehensive scholarship and serving your community, state, and country, this may be the best opportunity for you.
