They(March 15, 2012 DAYS GONE BYE...BY TOM BOGGS Three Decades of Tigers and Devils You're just as right as rain. I have rambled on about Demopolis Tigers and Linden Red Devils, along with reporting on Thomaston Tigers and Sweetwater Bulldogs, on these pages thelast 14 years or so, but this will be a little different. Let's take a moment this week just to scratch the surface of these football teams in 1940, 1950, and finish up with 1960. A few players for the Red and White of Linden in 1940 under Coach Stutz were Tony Vick, Dewey Watson, J.W. Honeycutt and Harold Glass. The Devils whupped up on Magnolia 40-0, over Sweetwater 7-0, and it was reported that Ford Lewis played the best game for the Bulldogs, and Linden Tied Thomaston 6-6. Up north of the Bogue that year there were players such as Bobby Matthews, John Robert Rankin, Freddie Rut ledge, John Caldwell, Francis Boozer, Ralph McNeil, Joe Rankin and Austin Caldwdl. This bunch under Coach Bully Hitchcock kept Linden from sweeping the county by winning that game 31-0. Comes the season of 1950, after we'd beat up for real on the axis powers in the big war five years before. Coach Chink Lott was the general at Demopolis, guiding the likes of Ed Eddins, Douglas Lott, John Kane, Harry Coker, Bill Rorie, Eddie Jackson, Eddie, Ronnie and Dewey Willingham and Tommy Ware. Demopolis played and beat Thomaston 13-0, some of those Thomaston Tigers being Jack Crocker, William Rankin and Tony Cannon. Once more, the Demopolis Tigers put it on the Devils 63-0 with Ralph Lewis making the last Tiger score on a quarterback sneak from the4 yard line. Down 'cross the creek in the county seat, the new coach was Homer Wesley who headed up Devils such as Pat Vice, Jack and Bobby Clark, Perry Nichols, Jack McClinton, Tommy Short, Bob Nichols, Don Peppenhorst, Kenneth Greene, Jack Pierce and Robert Duke. Other teammates that year were Jeff Foxhall, Pete Barkley, Frank Dunn, Spickey Chadwick and Shug Barnes. I remember all these fellows well, and they were a tough bunch, but they had some tough Development Center in Elementary students invited Columbiana on Sunday, February 12, 2012. A new era had begun for Linden during the 1958 season under Coach Pistol Henders, but during the 1960 grid wars Linden only managed to salvage 5 games in the win column although they were building with fellows such as Kenneth and Marvin Tucker, and the Devils did triumph over the Blue Tigers 13-0, although Thomaston, playing with John Moseley, Tommy McKnight and Wayne Lewis, put it on Linden 19-6, with Sweetwater and Linden bat- tling to a 7-7 tie. Things would'def- initely take a turn for the better 9n the Linden plains in subsequeht years. I The Coach of the Demopolis Tigers in 1960 was Charlie Stough," and a few of his grid warriors were Jimmy Barger, Melvin Abrams, Billy Duke, Don Black, Lewis Hunter Compton, Gene Shirley, Bobby Kidd, and Cecil Bedsole. Some hard hitting boys but they didn't hit on ally cylinders that year as they only managed to win two games over Livingston and Eutaw and a 13-13 tie with York. That was the last decade of foot- . ball for Marengo County High at Thomaston, as that school closed, and the Linden Red Devils ended up in the history books, as they gave way to the mw Linden Patriots. Meanwhile the Sweetwater Bulldogs started producing state champions as a way of life, and the Demopolis Tigers' trophy case began to bulge with Regional and State awards earned, and the Patrio took off themselves. Regardless of wins. losses or ties, back in the day, when there was a football squaring off between' Demopolis, Linden, Thomaston and Sweetwater, it would be a good time for a burglar to check out the down- town area since most everybody was standing four or five deep on the sidelines watching their favorite ,t'critters",'whe]ther Devils, Tigers of. Bulldogs, and those pretty cheer- leaders on both sidelines were hap- pity, leading the crowd with "Our bays gon shine tonight...our boys gon shine." , , i,, i ,, i ,, • , , , ,€/ FAXService • . = " " • 0.; . • • °e" o • ." ." :.
