Mclntyre MARENGO NURSING HOME NEWS DAYS GONE BYE...BY TOM BOGGS Post Office Folks and Mail Handling Tales When I reflect back on Post Office days down in Linden during the forties and fifties I remember hearing Rhode Island Red biddies chirping behind the mail boxes, and think about how proud I was when I'd saved up enough bond stamps in my book to trade 'em in for a twen- ty five dollar war bond. Just like every other little or town, lots of stuff and folks Centered around the U.S. Post Office, which in Linden was pretty much operated by Doc Law and Rose Carter in my younger days, and if you wanted to see everybody just wait a minute, and they'd be by to check on the mail and the latest talking. I recently came across some notes I took fifteen or sixteen years ago from talking with Bo and Mike McAlpine's late uncle, Sam Mike Sayers, who started work at the Demopolis Post Office around 1935 when Mr. Jimmy Monnier was the Post Master, and other fellows there were Strudwick McCants, Lamar Mullendore, H.A. Talley, Gordon McRae, S. T. Burton, Woodie Reeves and C. B. Watt. He said Steele Partridge, Jr. came on the next year, followed later by Tony Janes, M.C. Flowers, Jr., James Armistead and J.A. Lucas. When the war got started the north of the Bogue mail handling office hired on women folk Elva Thompson and Myrtis Godwin. I listed those old names for the benefit of my older readers who will smile at the remembrance of those folks. I remember when Sam Mike told me that Boyd Mackey went to work down there I immediately replied, "I bet he kept y'all laughing, didn't he?" Mr. Sam Mike chuckled and allowed that sure was the truth. One day the mail left on the truck, but it turned out some letters didn't make it out. Mr. Monier said something to • Boyd about the left behind mail. Boyd shrugged, kinda grinned the way he did, and replied, "Well, Mr. Round about 1967 Mr. Mullendore plotted out streets and numbers for mail delivery, but there were a few glitches every now and then like when somebody moved from their house at say 804 Main Street they'd take their numbers off the house, and nail those same num- bers up on their new house on Perry Street. A little confusing. There were two foot mail routes in Demopolis, one north and one south of the railroad, and carriers were limited to carrying a total of less than forty pounds, which was okay until Sears and Roebuck start- ed sending out those big thick cata- logs twice a year, although most people rushed to the Post Office as soon as they heard the catalogs were in, thus saving footwear on Woodie Reeves and S. C. Ulmer on the foot routes. Jimmy, I did the best I could, and that's all a mule can do. Dispatch clerks came to be known as "mules" around the Demopolis office, and Boyd kept on making folks laugh all over the place until he left for the true laugh- ing place beyond the clouds. I recollect daddy bring- ing in an eagerly awaited Sears package to the house, and it'd be just like Christmas waiting to open it up. The Post Office was a great gath- ering place, and I love the story Sam Mike told about .Mr. Sam Neilson who made a daily ritual of visiting with folks while he checked his mail. He'd stand by his box talking to folks, and every time a letter or card was stuck in his box he'd immediately take it out and read it right there, waiting for the next one. Sam Mike laughed and said sometime the mail clerk would stick a blank card in the box. Mr. Sam Neilson would reach in, still talking, and glance at the blank card. He'd look over at the mail clerk, give him a pained look, and getback to talk- ing 'til the next piece of U.S. mail got delivered to his box. Before I leave this story, I made a note that Ms. Elizabeth, Sam Mike's wife who was sitting there as I took notes, told me that Mr. Sam Neilson judged people by their post office manners as he would say that such and such a person was such a nice person. "They are so pleasant every time I see them down at the post office. Well, I've just written some stuff I hope you enjoy. That's all a mule can do.
