The program was given by
Jane Watson who began by stat-
ing that she really didn't like to
give programs that were
depressing and then she pro-
ceeded to report on the book
"Half the Sky" which was writ-
ten by Sheryl Wu Duun'and
Nicholas Kristof. She said the
book gave very graphic exam-
pies of many horrors that young
girls and women endured in the
Third World countries.
She told of the "sweat facto-
ties" that hire mostly women
who have smaller hands and
work faster. She said prostitu-
tion is very prevalent, and that
39,000 babies die annually in
China. Their culture and cus-
toms are so different from ours.
There is a constant struggle for
equality for women around the
world.
At the conclusion of her pro-
gram, Jane distributed a sheet to
each member telling of "Four
Steps you can take in the next
ten minutes". This contained
different websites one can con-
tact regarding helping girls or
women through various organi-
zations. During the discussion
of the program, Joyce ga
told of a project she works with
that help abused women. She
displayed a beautiful purse and
told of various items that are
made by abused women.
Jan McDonald also told of
the Rotary Club project, 'micro-
lending.org' that also helps
women that are abused.
It was a very enlightening
and thought-provoking pro-
gram.
• During the fellowship hour
the members enjoyed delicious
refreshments served by the host-
ess.
Paula Bonnet extended an
invitation for the members to
meet at her home for the next
meeting on February 2nd.
