The MA)un- ior Longhorns were invited to participate in tile tournamen after turning in a peffed record of 9-0 prior to the start of the tournament. Being @e only team invited to the teur- nam ent with a 100% win pr- centage the Longhorns were given a bye for the first round of the tournament. They were scheduled to play the winner of an earlier game between Evangel Christian and Escambia Academy at 2:00 Saturday afternoon. The game between the Lions of Evangel and the Longhorns of Marengo started with everything going right for the Lions. Evangel had a great height advantage over the Longhorns with their center being 6 foot 6 inches tall. Within the first few minutes of the game the Lion center had used his height to dunk for two points over the Longhorn defenders. Evangel ntinued to score easily and at the end of the first quarter the Longhorns found themselves down by score of 13 to 6. With/determirtion and refusi to be intimated by Evangl's size the Long'ms came out strong in the second quarter outscoring the Lion 17 to 9. When the buzzer sound- ed for half time MA headed into the locker room with a one point lead or Evangel. The Longhorns continued to outscore the Lions throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth. With just 2:38 left on the game clock the Longhorns looked to be in good shape with aten point lead' over the Lions. But Evangel would not lose with- out a fight. They closed the gap on the Longhorns and when the final buzzer sounded the Longhorns were [he win- hers over Evangel with a one point victory 46 to 45. One of the keys to coming out on top against the much taller opponents was the out- standing rebounding of the team. Carson Huckabee led the Longhorns on the boards with 11 rebounds followed by Shade Pritchett with 9. Cason Cook added 5, Randy Champion had 3 and Hayden Huckabee had 2. The aggres- sive defense of the Longhorns attributed to the win by steal- ing the ball 16 times from the Lion's offense. Leading the hums scoring in the victory was Shade Pritchett with 18 points and Hayden Huckabee with 13 points. Cason Cook con- tributed 6, Carson Huckabee had 5 and Randy Champion finished with scoring with 4 points. Another crucial factor of this victory was the fan sup- port. With the MA Junior High Cheerleaders leading the cants they not only beat the team on the court but they out cheered the Lion fans in the stands too. With this win over the Evangel Lions the nghoms were advanced to the.nal round of the touma: met. Now they had to sit and wait for their next opponent who would be the decided in the game between Lowndes Academy and Lakeside School. The host team the Lowndes Rebels won over Lakeside. Both teams had a chance to rest while the girls' champion was decided. The Longhorns started the championship game with a little more confi- dence after their defeat of Evangel. But the junior high boys from MA still found themselves behind at the hd of the first quarter by a score of 12 to 8. The pace of the game and the scoring picked up after the break between quarters. The Longhorns outscored the Rebels 14 to 6 in the second quarter and took a 22 to 18 lead into the half-time break. After half-time the Longhorns continued to out- play and out-score their oppo- nents. The game ended with the Longhorns 50 and the Rebels 35 making the Marengo Academy Junior High Boys the 2012 AISA 2-A Stat Champions and the only junior high boys team to win a basketball state rifle. Once again the Longhom's defense was able to steal the ball from their oppont 14 rimes while only turning the ball over four times. Rebounding also proved to be important to the victory as in the game with Evangel. Freshmen Carson Huckabee and Shade Pritchett each had 8 rebounds, Cason Cook added 7, Hayden Huckabee had 3, Randy Champion had 2, and Caleb Broadhead, Daniel Pritchett, Spencer Martin, and Myles Pritchett each had 1. At a crucial point in the game the second team was able to come in and give their teammates a ' rest holding the Rebels'to only six points. Scoring in the champi- onsllip game was led by Hayden Huckabee with 22 points, Shade Pritchett with 16, Cason Cook with 6, Carson Huckabee and Randy Champion had 2 each. Daniel Pritchett and Myles Pritchett each added one on made free throws. FoC:their performance dur- ing the tournament Hayden Huckabee and Carson , Huckabee were awarded All- tournament trophies and Shade Pritchett wa name MVP of the 2012 champi- onship tournament. The Loiiiorns are coached by Larry Huckabee. When asked how the Longhorns were able to come out victorious in the tournament Coach Huckabee said it was great defense by the whole team, everyone on the team doing his job, and the out-standing support from the Longhorn cheerleaders and fans. Members of the 2012 2-A State Champion team are Shade Pritchett, Carson Huckabee, Randy Champion, Myles Pritchett, Spencer Martin, Cason Cook, Hayden Huckabee, Daniel Pritchett, Caleb Broadhead, and Andrew::. Martin. Andrew was not able to participate in the toum merit due to illness but he was there to cheer his team on to victory. The Junior High Longhorns still have four games left in the season. Their only goal for the year left to fulfill is to remain undefeated. Congratulations on the Championship and Good Luck to the Longhorns on the rest of the 2012 season. Marengo's 'Super Six' shocks Southern Choctaw, 60-59, in overtime By Jim DeWitt Marengo dressed only six players for Saturday's (Jan. 21) game against Southern Choctaw..
