Burning down an old house to clear the
land for other use means that Monday,
Jan. 23, when it was reported to the 911
center in Demopolis, a note should have
been posted that there was a controlled
bum on county Road One in Old Spring
Hill. The 911 dispatcher paged out the
Old Spring Hill Fire Department. which
asked for assistance from Demopolis
Fire Department. The man who set the
old house ablaze was there and he said
the building was owned by Lac0rnie
Harris. Another building on the property
also needs razing.

Cedric Williams of the Boys
and Girls club in Thomasville is
putting a basketball league
together now.
Williams spoke with Mayor
Sheldon Day and city council
members Monday, Jan. 23,
about his quarterly report.
The league will include the
age groups of 5-6 year olds, 7-
14, and even a 15-18 year old
group. In recent years it was
hard to put together a league
with the older kids due to some
fighting. "This year hopes to be
different," said Williams.
The boys and girls club audit
was completed and the organi-
zation received a clean audit
and a good financial standing
letter. The budget last year was
for $193,000 and the budget for
the current year was approved
for $115,000.
This year the club is starting
a stomp out bullying campaign..
"Be a buddy, not a bully," is the
campaign slogan.
Churches, schools, and other
organizations will work with
the boys and girls club to
spread the word.
The summer youth work
program went well last year and
this year the goal is to assist
more youths in getting summer
jobs. A full time director has
been hired to help local busi-
nesses pair up with the area
youths.
Amber McArthur also spoke
for the area youth. McArthur is
from the South West Alabama
Behavioral Health care and
spoke in about their new tip
line. The tip line is to cut down
on arrests from underage drink-
ing, and/or drug uses. The early
reporting can lead to the pre-
vention of the act as quickly as
possible.
The tip line can help teens
report underage drinking, drug
use, sales to minors, and under-
age parties that are illegally
being served alcohol.
"We hope that you all are on
board with helping us to make
Southwest Alabama a safer and
better place for all of our
youth," said McArthur.
