Meeting near Old Spring Hill at Majo's activity center,,the host for the evening was Thomas Moore of Demopolis. He introduced the candidates and offered them three minutes in which to speak about their qualifications and visions for the county. He pointed out that Highway 43 needs to be four laned through the county and he cited Joe McCorquodale's influence in getting that done in Clarke County. Ward said he has sent all his life in dealing with the pub- lic and helping people. He said he thinks as judge of probate he will have contacts which can help Marengo County. Charles Parten was the next speaker and he emphasized that it is important to get industry in the county. "We need to make the county attractive for industry." He spoke of his work experience in running sawmills and said he wants to help people with industry. Carla Gaines Mclntosh stressed that everybody needs to be treated fairly and nicely. She said she has been thinking about running for this office for several years, and now is the time to do it. Kevin Jacobs began his speech dis- cussing his accounting degree from the University of West Alabama and his posi- tion with ThyssenKrupp, the steel company in Mobile County. Jacobs outlined his resih0nsibilities for one of the largest indus- tries in the world. He said he wants to serve the community that raised him. He said he would be able to run the tags, licenses, and elections in a manner that reflects the past administration. Laurie Hall told the small gathering in the rain storm that her education d career included nursing and practicing attorney with a local finn. She explained she does a lot of probate work with wills, trusts, estates, guardianships, and whatever her clients need. She said she can run elections fairly and will put any new laws before the people. Bill Barley of Demopolis listed his degrees from Auburn, Alabama, and UWA and his work experiences with municipal government, schools, and his roots in the county. He stressed that this county needs to prepare its students for the work force which will be needed in the future. Toby Henderson and Mike O'Neal did not appear before the New South Coalition. They did not receive the letters of invita- tion that the others got. Moore announced that the endorsement decision would be made Monday, Jan. 30. Sen. Senator Shelby will address the leg- islative agenda for the second session of the 112th Congress as well as important issues facing the nation and the state of Alabama. Following his remarks. Senator Shelby will open the floor to "Over the years, these meetings have provided an excellent opportunity for area residents to listen and voice their opinions on the activities of our govern- ment," said Shelby. "This will be a great chance to discuss the important issues facing our state and our nation." This will be Senator Shelby's 1.677th county visit since being elected to serve the state of Alabama. As part of his commitment to Alabamians, Senator Shelby holds a meeting in each county every year. This meeting is open to the public. Members of the media are encouraged to .attend. Shelby will also join the residents of Sumter County for a county visit on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10:00 am. The county visit, which is open to the public, will take place in the Brock "Y" Hall at the University of West Alabama in Livingston. Senator Shelby will meet with the res- idents of Choctaw County for a county visit Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2:00 pm. She promised an efficient staff. Kenny Freeman of Demopolis told the crowd that anything he has done was a gift from God. He said he knew the job has an awesome responsibility and he will work to secure growth for the county. His con- cern was the losing of young people. He wants to bring in jobs to allow them to stay in Marengo. He said he was raised to do the right thing and he said he prides him- self on his honesty and work. New South Coalition, Marengo County Chapter, hosted a screening for candidates for circuit clerk Tuesday, Jan. 17. All five candidates appeared and spoke of their qualifications, experience, and vision for Marengo County. Cecil Williamson of Demopolis was the first. She cited a lengthy work experience with various agencies and departments in the state and her tenure as mayor of Demopolis. She said her work ethic quali- fies her better than the rest and that she will work the legislature to get money to hire the clerks taken out of the office.
